Finnegan is a friendly sort called Finny by his closet friends. He is quick to laugh and easy to talk to, he can listen for hours to someone and appear to be the most interested person imaginable (even if he's not). Finny has often been told that he's got a face that engenders trust in those around him and he's always found this to be generally true. Preferring to diffuse situations with a good laugh or a mug of beer rather than his fists, some forget he is a skilled brawler having had more than one run-in with the law in his youth after a few too many.

Finnegan never felt right joining Starfleet but briefly did attend the Academy, mostly out of respect for his father who was an officer himself. Too prone to trouble the Academy gave him a choice to leave willingly or be sent home in disgrace after a heated bar brawl with a trio from the delegation of visiting Klingons. Even though the Klingons themselves were not offended, the school was deeply shamed by this. Finny himself was, to his mind, defending the Federations honor after pointed insults were being traded around about the Federation.
To Finny this was a turning point, he'd never wanted to join in the first place and his blatant pride in the Federation was what got him into trouble. A bit disillusioned after the incident, he left willingly, was handed an honorable discharge and floated around various jobs in the Sol system for a while. He met a man, a (then Commander) Sal D'Amico on a trip to one of the Lunar colonies while D'Amico was visiting friends there. Sal was forming an organization, then just named Blue Team that would later become Solas Tempus. The two became friends over the few months of leave that D'Amico had but Finny still declined to join. Sal extended an open invitation though before he left for the new base of operations that would orbit the 1st planet in the Markab Star System. It wasn't until about another year or so had passed that Finnegan found himself on that side of the Galaxy running a cargo transport to the Markabian Mining Confederation of specialized equipment. The job was lousy and the freighter was falling apart, he was in command, but he soon found out that the Andorian who ran the company was up to his eyes in debt with the Orions for missing shipments. Finny decided to call up his friend Sal and see what kinds of jobs they had to offer.
Finny was found to be an excellent officer now, having been seasoned by life and hardship and being trained in an environment where there was no real love for Starfleet and their practices. Though, he really didn't know why at the time he did know that Sal himself and Sal's commanding officer had a very dim almost hostile view of Starfleet Command. Rising through the ranks quickly on skill, quick thinking, and his ability to diffuse tense situations and build bridges while keeping perspective. These qualities lead him to train as a Temporal Operative for the group and to join the action arm code named Blue Team. Training under (now Captain) D'Amico and learning the skills to be an effective operative in covert information gathering. Finnegan has been a close friend and ally to Sal ever since, though he is trusted by the Admiralty, something about them gives him pause, there is history there. History that he gets the feeling he doesn't really want to know about, given this he steers clear of them, especially Admiral Lance Thomas who Finny feels is wound entirely too tightly.
